Dr Janan Chandrananth is a foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon consulting from the Collaborative Orthopaedic Group rooms in Mulgrave and Berwick, with knee and trauma work alongside his subspecialty. Referrals are welcome from GPs, emergency doctors, physiotherapists and podiatrists.

Please include a contact number for the patient, any relevant imaging and where it was performed, and current medications. Reception will call the patient directly to arrange the appointment.
How quickly your patient will be seen
Urgent: please call reception today on (03) 9123 4402. This covers fractures needing urgent management and acute tendon ruptures, such as a ruptured Achilles. These patients are seen within two business days. Please phone rather than sending the referral and waiting. Fractures are covered in more detail on our private fracture clinic page.
Routine: send the referral. Most new patients are offered an appointment within about two weeks. If you'd like your patient seen sooner, call, and reception can usually find something earlier.
Imaging before referral
For any foot, ankle or knee problem, please request bilateral weight-bearing X-rays. Standing films of both sides show alignment and joint space that non-weight-bearing views can miss. After an acute injury, non weight-bearing imaging is fine. A suspected Achilles rupture doesn't need imaging before referral; please phone instead. If further imaging such as MRI is needed, it's arranged after assessment.

What you’ll receive back
You’ll receive a letter within one to two days of the initial consultation, covering the assessment, the imaging reviewed or requested, and the management plan. Patients who proceed to surgery have follow-up appointments and a rehabilitation plan.

Surgery is performed at Mulgrave Private, St John of God Berwick, Knox Private and Vermont Private. Dr Chandrananth also has a public appointment at Peninsula University Hospital (Frankston). He speaks Japanese and Tamil.
What to refer
Foot and ankle is his subspecialty: bunions and keyhole bunion surgery, big toe arthritis, ankle sprains, syndesmosis injuries and ankle instability, ankle fractures, ankle arthritis, Achilles tendinopathy and rupture, flat foot and PTTD, Morton’s neuroma, and plantar fasciitis.
He also treats knee arthritis, meniscal tears, ACL injury and patella instability.
He treats orthopaedic trauma, including fractures in children. He completed six months of paediatric orthopaedic training at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Portland, during his orthopaedic training.
Upper limb problems other than fractures can be seen by COG’s upper limb surgeon. For hip problems, or if you’re unsure whether a problem sits within his scope, call reception; that’s quicker than a referral that has to be redirected.
Patients without private health insurance
Surgery is performed in private hospitals. For uninsured patients who are likely to need surgery, a referral to a public hospital outpatient clinic may suit them better. Self-funded surgery is also available, with a written quote covering the surgeon, anaesthetist, assistant and hospital.
What your patient will pay
Dr Chandrananth participates in the known gap scheme with most major health funds, such as Bupa and HCF. Fees are published in full on the patient fees page, so you can tell your patient what to expect before they leave your room.
Referring as a physiotherapist or podiatrist
Physiotherapists and podiatrists are welcome to refer directly, and will receive the same correspondence as a referring GP. One point worth passing to your patient: Medicare rebates for a specialist consultation apply when the referral comes from a medical practitioner. If your patient intends to claim, please ask them to see their GP to issue a referral as well.
